After insertion, the string attached to the Copper IUD should be present in the upper vagina. This is normal and helps in removal.
If the string cannot be felt, possible reasons include:
- The string has moved up into the cervix or uterus
- The IUD has fallen out without the person noticing
- Very rarely, uterine perforation during insertion
Until a doctor confirms the IUD is properly in place, it is important to:
- Rule out pregnancy
- Use another contraceptive method temporarily
The IUD may be expelled, especially within the first 3 months after insertion or during the first menstrual period after insertion.
Women are advised to check for the string gently (without pulling it) during the first few months.
If the string is not found, or if there is severe lower abdominal pain, medical attention should be sought immediately.
Only a medical examination can confirm the exact situation.
