Child abuse has unfortunately become something that is frequently reported in Sri Lanka today.

To protect children from this, it is important that all of us know how to recognize when a child is being abused.

A child can be abused in many ways, including physically, mentally, and sexually. Even neglecting a child or failing to provide necessary care is also considered child abuse.

In many cases, children are abused by people close to them, including family members and guardians. However, due to parents being busy, children may be left in the care of relatives or domestic workers, and abuse can also occur in those situations.

How can you recognize physical abuse in a child?

If a child is hit with hands, feet, or objects like sticks or rods, they may develop bruises and injuries on the skin. Finger marks or parallel marks from sticks may be visible.

In active children who run and play, accidental injuries can occur, but those are usually found on areas like the knees and elbows.

If there are bruises on the buttocks, inner or outer thighs, or genital area, these may be due to physical abuse.

If there are bruises at different stages of healing, it may indicate repeated or long-term abuse.

Burn-like circular marks on the skin may be caused by cigarettes. Burns on the buttocks or legs may be caused by immersion in hot water.

Physical abuse can also result in fractures, and injuries to the brain, eyes, or internal organs.

Sexual abuse of children

Sexual abuse can occur in several ways.

In Sri Lanka, any sexual activity with a child under 16 years old, with or without consent, is considered statutory rape. This is a serious offense punishable by a prison sentence of not less than 15 years.

Another growing concern is online grooming, where children are gradually drawn into sexual activities through social media platforms.

Signs of sexual abuse may include bleeding, itching, or discharge from the genital area.

A child may also become withdrawn, isolated, fearful, unusually aggressive, or show behavioral changes such as bedwetting, declining school performance, or appearing unusually “mature” for their age.

Other forms of abuse

In addition to the above, children may also be exploited through child labor, forced begging, or being used in drug distribution.

Although laws exist in Sri Lanka against these practices, they still occur.

Long-term impact

Child abuse can have serious long-term effects on a child’s life. It can damage their mental health permanently and also affect their physical development. In some cases, individuals who were abused as children may later become abusers themselves.

Because of this, child abuse is a serious issue that can make society unsafe, and it requires collective action to prevent it.

What to do if you suspect abuse

If you suspect that a child is being abused in any way, you can report it to the National Child Protection Authority by calling 1929. Your identity will be kept confidential, and necessary steps will be taken to protect the child.

If you are a parent and suspect your child has been abused, you should take the child to the nearest government hospital with a pediatric ward. A specialist medical team will provide treatment and take the necessary next steps.

Let us work together to protect innocent children and build a society free from child abuse.
