How can gastritis be prevented?
Gastritis has multiple causes. If these are avoided, gastritis can often be prevented.
- Smoking and alcohol are two major causes. They can also lead to complications such as stomach ulcers (peptic ulcers). Therefore, stopping smoking and alcohol consumption is very important.
- Painkillers like aspirin and Brufen (NSAIDs) can damage the stomach lining. These should not be used without medical advice. When pain relief is needed, paracetamol is a safer option.
- Stress is also a contributing factor. Gastritis symptoms often worsen during exams, work pressure, or family problems. Managing stress through good sleep, hobbies, and music can help.
It is also important to eat meals regularly and on time.
Eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day can help control gastritis.
Avoid lying down or sleeping for about 3 hours after meals.
Reduce intake of acidic foods, oily or flour-based foods, and spicy foods.
Reduce carbonated drinks and drink plenty of water.
Maintaining proper nutrition and regular meals is very important for controlling gastritis.
Do not stop medication once symptoms improve. Always complete the full course prescribed by your doctor.
