Did you know that your neck can swell if your body becomes iodine deficient—even if salt contains iodine?

Even though many people know that salt contains iodine, did you know that your neck can swell like this if your body does not get enough iodine?

Many common mistakes made when adding salt to food can destroy the iodine present in iodized salt. Today, let’s discuss how to properly use iodized salt and prevent iodine deficiency.

Why does the body need iodine?

The main function of iodine in the human body is the production of a hormone called thyroxine.

This hormone is produced by the thyroid gland, which is located at the front of your neck.

If iodine levels in the body become low, the production of thyroxine decreases. As a result, the thyroid gland may enlarge, leading to a condition called goiter.

However, thyroid enlargement can also occur due to several other causes.

Effects of iodine deficiency

In addition to goiter, iodine deficiency can cause:

  • Fatigue and lack of energy
  • Reproductive health problems
  • Reduced intelligence and developmental delays in children
  • Speech and hearing impairments

In infants, severe iodine deficiency can lead to a condition called cretinism, which results in poor physical growth and impaired brain development.

During pregnancy, iodine deficiency may lead to:

  • Miscarriage
  • Stillbirth
  • Impaired brain development in the fetus

Iodine supplementation in Sri Lanka

The main strategy used in Sri Lanka to prevent iodine deficiency is the iodization of salt before it is released to the market.

However, to ensure that your body receives the full amount of iodine from salt, you should follow these practices:

Proper use of iodized salt:

  1. Do not wash salt before adding it to food.
  2. Add salt only after cooking is completed.
    • Washing salt or adding it during cooking can reduce its iodine content.
  3. Store salt in dark-colored containers, such as brown glass jars.
    • Keep the container away from direct sunlight.

Foods rich in iodine

In addition to iodized salt, regularly consuming iodine-rich foods also helps prevent iodine deficiency. These include:

  • Sea fish such as sardines, anchovies, prawns, and crabs
  • Vegetables and leafy greens

By ensuring proper iodine intake through correct use of iodized salt and a balanced diet, you can prevent many health problems and maintain an active, healthy life
