In the previous section, we discussed carpal tunnel syndrome, which causes pain and numbness in the hand and fingers.

When you visit a doctor with these symptoms, several tests may be done to confirm the condition.

A test called a nerve conduction study is performed to evaluate the electrical activity of the compressed nerve.

In addition, doctors may check for underlying risk factors such as diabetes, arthritis, or hypothyroidism.

Depending on the severity of your condition, the doctor will decide the appropriate treatment.

In early stages, especially when symptoms occur mainly at night, wearing a wrist splint to keep the wrist in a fixed position during sleep may be sufficient.

If the condition is mild, an injection to reduce swelling around the wrist may help control symptoms.

In severe cases, surgery may be required to relieve pressure on the nerve.

During surgery, the doctor numbs your hand and makes a small incision on the palm side of the wrist. The tunnel through which the nerve passes is then opened to relieve the pressure on the nerve.

If left untreated for a long time, permanent muscle wasting in the palm can occur, which cannot be reversed.

How can it be prevented?

If you work in a job that increases the risk of this condition, it is important to take a break at least once every hour.

During these breaks, you can perform wrist exercises:

  • Make a fist
  • Then fully open and stretch your fingers
  • Repeat this five times

If you type frequently, ensure that your posture is correct. Your hands should be at the level of the desk when sitting.

Adjust your desk, chair, and keyboard so that your wrist is not bent while typing.

Managing other risk factors also helps prevent the condition.

If you notice any of the symptoms mentioned, seek medical attention early. Early treatment can help prevent permanent damage.
