Did you know that the Copper IUD is more effective than Postinor (emergency contraceptive pills)?

Many people are unaware that the Copper IUD can also be used as emergency contraception.

After unprotected sexual intercourse, many young people rely only on emergency contraceptive pills. However, this is not a reliable long-term strategy.

Postinor prevents only about two-thirds of possible pregnancies when used repeatedly over time. Its effectiveness is limited.

In contrast, the Copper IUD:

  • Prevents up to 99% of pregnancies after unprotected intercourse
  • Can be used up to 5 days after intercourse as emergency contraception
  • Can be left in place for long-term contraception or removed later if desired

Unlike emergency pills, which must be taken within a short time window, the Copper IUD provides both emergency and long-term protection.

If a woman wishes, the IUD can later be removed, and fertility returns immediately with no long-term effect.

For those frequently relying on emergency contraception, a long-term method like the Copper IUD is a much safer and more effective option.
