Did you know that this small T-shaped device inserted into the uterus can be used for contraception?

The Copper IUD (Copper Loop) is considered one of the most effective and safest contraceptive methods available today. It can prevent unwanted pregnancies for up to 10 years.

Since the copper loop does not contain hormones, it does not cause weight gain or hormonal side effects. The device consists of a T-shaped plastic frame wrapped with a thin copper wire.

In this method, the T-shaped device is inserted into the uterus by a doctor using an applicator through the vagina and cervix. Once properly placed inside the uterus, the applicator is removed. No anesthesia or sedation is usually required, and the procedure takes about five minutes.

After correct placement, a small string attached to the device remains in the upper vagina through the cervix. This is normal and helps in future removal.

If you do not prefer permanent contraception or find daily pills inconvenient, the Copper IUD is a suitable option.

If pregnancy is confirmed to be not present, the device can be inserted at any time during the menstrual cycle. It can also be inserted within 48 hours after delivery or after 6 weeks postpartum. It does not affect breastfeeding.

The Copper IUD works immediately after insertion, so no additional contraception is required.

It also does not affect sexual intercourse. In fact, some people may feel improved sexual comfort due to reduced anxiety about pregnancy.

Does Copper IUD affect future fertility?

No. The Copper IUD does not permanently affect fertility.

It works by:

  • Creating chemical changes that prevent sperm from fertilizing the egg
  • Changing the uterine lining so implantation cannot occur

However, it does NOT cause abortion.

As long as the device is in place, it effectively prevents pregnancy. Once removed, fertility returns immediately, and a woman can conceive again without delay.
