Did you know gastritis can be caused by bacteria?

The main cause of chronic gastritis is infection of the stomach lining by a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori.

Many people are not aware that bacteria can cause gastritis.

This bacterium usually enters the body during childhood through contaminated food and water.

If tests confirm the presence of this bacteria, treatment with antibiotics for about 7–14 days can eliminate the infection, under medical supervision.

If left untreated, chronic gastritis can lead to peptic ulcers. These ulcers may later perforate and cause serious complications.

In addition to H. pylori, smoking and the use of NSAID painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen also contribute to ulcer formation.

Long-term gastritis caused by this bacterium may also increase the risk of stomach cancer.
