What Do You Know About E-Cigarettes (Vapes)?

Have you noticed that e-cigarettes, or vapes, are becoming increasingly popular among young people in Sri Lanka? But do you know what happens to your body when you use them?

What is an e-cigarette?

An e-cigarette is a device that heats a liquid called vape juice or e-liquid using a battery, producing an aerosol (often mistakenly called "vapour") that the user inhales.

E-liquids typically contain:

  • Nicotine
  • Glycerin and/or propylene glycol
  • Flavoring agents and other chemicals

Some e-liquids are marketed as nicotine-free, although their composition may vary.

Are e-cigarettes safe?

Although e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco or produce tar in the same way as conventional cigarettes, they are not harmless.

Nicotine addiction

Many e-liquids contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance. Regular use can lead to nicotine dependence, making it difficult to stop using e-cigarettes. Young people who vape may also be more likely to start smoking conventional cigarettes later.

Effects on the lungs and heart

The aerosol produced by e-cigarettes contains chemicals that can irritate and damage the lungs. Vaping has been associated with an increased risk of:

  • Asthma and worsening of existing asthma
  • Chronic respiratory symptoms such as cough and shortness of breath
  • Cardiovascular disease through the effects of nicotine on the heart and blood vessels

Harmful flavoring chemicals

Some flavoring chemicals, such as diacetyl, have been linked to a serious lung condition called bronchiolitis obliterans, commonly known as "popcorn lung." This condition can cause:

  • Persistent cough
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Reduced lung function

However, it is important to note that not all e-cigarettes contain diacetyl, and the risk depends on the specific product and its ingredients.

What do we know about the long-term effects?

E-cigarettes have become widely used only within the last decade, so researchers are still studying their long-term health effects. While all long-term risks are not yet fully understood, growing evidence shows that vaping is not risk-free and can have harmful effects on health.

What is the World Health Organization's position?

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that e-cigarettes contain substances that are harmful to health and should not be considered safe products. The WHO particularly emphasizes protecting children, adolescents, and non-smokers from exposure to these products.

E-cigarettes may be marketed as a modern or safer alternative to smoking, but they still expose users to addictive nicotine and potentially harmful chemicals. The safest choice for your health is not to start vaping, and if you already use e-cigarettes, seeking support to quit can significantly benefit your long-term health.

If you have friends or family members who use e-cigarettes, sharing accurate information with them could help them make informed decisions about their health.
